Due to the absence of safe sanitation spaces, they face health risks, dignity issues, and safety concerns. To address this problem and promote hygiene, the Central Government and state governments are jointly implementing the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) a flagship scheme aimed at improving sanitation across villages.

Under this scheme, eligible rural households receive ₹12,000 financial assistance to construct individual household toilets. This helps families lead a healthier and more dignified life while contributing to cleaner and safer villages.

About Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural)

Launched on 2 October 2014, Swachh Bharat Mission aims to fulfill Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of a clean India. The main goal of the rural mission is to make villages Open Defecation Free (ODF).

From 2020 to 2025, under SBM Phase II, the focus is not only on building toilets but also on long-term sanitation solutions, including:

  • Solid waste management

  • Liquid waste management

  • Grey water management

₹12,000 Toilet Subsidy – Key Details

  • Total Assistance: ₹12,000 per eligible household

  • Installments:

    • 1st Installment: Released after construction work begins

    • 2nd Installment: Released after completion of the toilet

  • Payment Method: Direct Bank Transfer (DBT)

  • Verification Process: Subsidy is approved only after geo-tagging and physical verification by officials

Who Can Benefit? (Eligibility Criteria)

This subsidy is meant for rural households that currently do not have a toilet. Priority is given to:

  • BPL families

  • SC/ST households

  • Small & marginal farmers

  • Landless agricultural labourers

  • Women-headed families

  • Households with elderly or disabled members

  • Families with valid Aadhaar and bank account

How to Apply for Swachh Bharat Toilet Subsidy

You can apply either online or offline depending on your convenience.

1. Online Application Process

  1. Visit the official Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) website.

  2. Go to Citizen Registration and create an account using your mobile number.

  3. Enter the received OTP and log in.

  4. Click on “New Application” to begin the form.

  5. Fill in your personal and household details.

  6. Upload scanned copies of required documents.

  7. Submit the application and note down the application reference number.

2. Offline Application Process

  1. Visit your nearest Gram Panchayat office.

  2. Request the Toilet Subsidy Application Form.

  3. Fill in the form with accurate details.

  4. Submit photocopies of:

    • Aadhaar Card

    • Bank Passbook

    • Ration Card

    • BPL Certificate (if applicable)

    • Passport size photograph

  5. The Gram Panchayat will forward your application for verification.
